Materials

  • Food-safe container with drainage
  • Loose potting mix
  • Carrot, radish, turnip, or beet seed
  • Scoops
  • Watering bottle
  • Large visual plant label

Safety first

Use clean containers and approved soil. Do not taste classroom produce unless it is washed and approved under school food and feeding rules.

Follow each student's IEP, health, feeding, allergy, behavior, and mobility plans.

Objectives by House

House 1

Students will explore a root vegetable using a chosen sense and participate in one planting action.

House 2

Students will identify under/over or root/leaf and plant a seed with modeled support.

House 3

Students will follow a three-step planting sequence and identify one need of the seed.

House 4 & 5

Students will compare root crops, use spacing guidance, and plant and label a container with increasing independence.

Access supports

Communication Model five core words; accept speech, AAC, eye gaze, gestures, object choices, signs, and partner-assisted scanning.

Sensory Present one material at a time. Offer tools, gloves, observe-only, a scent-free choice, and a quiet break.

Motor Stabilize containers, pre-loosen parts, use adapted grips, and offer seated, standing, partner, or directing roles.

Learning Show the finished result, model first, use short visual steps, repeat, and record the least support needed.
